Follow the Money: Kalshi's $1.7 Billion Election

Follow the money in the 2026 midterms and most of it leads to one venue. DeFi Rate's Election Day tally put total midterm trading at $1.94 billion, with Kalshi accounting for $1.70 billion of it. The same tally's early-morning split showed the rest of the field: Polymarket at $78 million, Polymarket US at $34 million and DraftKings Predictions at $68 million. An earlier snapshot from Trefis told the same story at an earlier hour: Kalshi at about $1.1 billion against about $340 million for Polymarket, roughly 3.2 times the volume. Kalshi reported $1.33 billion across all midterm bets as of Monday (Reuters), and its share of the combined two-venue volume has been the structural story of the cycle: Polymarket's combined market share fell to 17.2 percent in the 30 days before October 29 as Kalshi pulled away (Gaming America).

Where the money sits matters as much as how much there is. The two biggest single markets are the chamber markets: House control above $219 million in volume and Senate control above $153 million (Action Network). Kalshi's Congress balance-of-power market has passed $106 million on its own. The Anti-Corruption Data Collective counts $431 million wagered on congressional markets this cycle, nearly triple 2024 (RG.org), spread across more than 28,000 midterm markets. Politics is not a category on these venues today, it is the venue: DeFi Rate's top-50 board shows politics taking $44 million of $51 million in 24-hour volume, and its category trackers showed politics payouts of $211 million in 24 hours, up 94 percent (DeFi Rate).

The contract counts underline the dollar gap. Kalshi traded 286 million midterm contracts by Election Eve, 28 million of them in the last 24 hours, with 195 million still open. In October, the last full month before the vote, Kalshi logged about $65 billion in volume against about $10 billion for Polymarket US (CryptoBriefing). Even the map markets carry size now: the Senate swing-state map traded $5.6 million in 24 hours, 3.8 times its daily average. Money also moved around the markets, not just through them: the two venues gave at least $5 million to political organizations this cycle, and Polymarket paid creators at least $350,000 (So Does It Matter).

The flow underneath the totals has a shape. Polymarket whale flow totaled $8.9 million across 418 large trades in 24 hours (Rivo). At the top of the trader boards, one wallet, googleplayB, leads Polymarket with $3.0 million in profit on $23.1 million traded, the weekly leaderboard tops out at $3.95 million in profit for the leading wallet (PolyTrackers), and Kalshi's daily board was led by EdZachary with $217,300 in profit (Rivo). Concentration shows up in the politics book too: a single Polymarket wallet holds $145,000 of the $229,000 that the platform's top traders have backing Democratic Senate control (Action Network). When the Senate market moves tonight, a meaningful share of the other side of the trade is a handful of wallets.

Some of the money is buying information the slow way. Kalshi and Polymarket traders have been canvassing voters in person to find a midterm information edge (PANews), knocking on doors to build the ground read that the order book cannot see. It is the logical end of a market that pays for being right early: if prices aggregate public information instantly, the remaining edge is information that is not public yet, gathered one doorstep at a time.

The business underneath the betting is scaling with it. Polymarket traders paid about $118.9 million in fees in the 30 days to November 3 (Dexsheet), and the venues came into Election Day fresh off a record October: $123.3 billion in total prediction-market volume, with Kalshi accounting for about 80 percent (TokenPost). Kalshi also raised $1 billion at a $40 billion valuation in the run-up to the vote, a single-source report the market has not independently confirmed (TokenPost).

The concentration cuts both ways, and tonight will show it. A Senate market carried by a few large wallets can reprice violently when results start landing in the close states, and a venue holding $1.70 billion of the $1.94 billion total will set the reference price every other board follows. The money has already voted on who runs this market. After tonight, it finds out what its votes were worth.
