Crypto Is Now Number Two: $2.7 Billion in a Single Week

Crypto just became the second-biggest business in prediction markets. Crypto-related volume on Kalshi and Polymarket reached a record $2.7 billion in a single week in mid-October 2026, and that total makes crypto the second most traded category on both platforms, behind only sports.

Bitcoin did most of the work. Kalshi's Bitcoin contracts alone generated over $2 billion in that one week, the bulk of the combined $2.7 billion, and the standout product is its 15-minute up-or-down contract on Bitcoin. One short-duration contract family now moves more in a week than most categories move in a month.

The challenger is moving too. Polymarket's US arm reported 15-minute Bitcoin volume of about $92 million to $101 million in its first full week of operation. The crypto surge sits inside a record month at Kalshi, whose peak week of October 5 to 11 reached $19.03 billion in total contract volume across every category, with daily volume regularly between $3.9 billion and $4.4 billion.

The tell is what traders are choosing. The record arrived while spot trading volumes across crypto decline, and larger players such as Coinbase are expanding into prediction markets to find the engagement spot trading no longer delivers. A 15-minute contract rewards speed and punishes hesitation: this is exposure to volatility in tiny increments, not long-term ownership, and $2.7 billion a week says that is now the product traders want.
