Late Democratic bets swell prediction markets as midterm polls close

Reuters reports that more than 1.48 billion dollars was wagered on the midterm elections, and analytics firm BETINT found traders poured more than 4 million dollars into last-ditch bets minutes after the first polls closed at 6 p.m. ET, mostly backing Democrats. Nearly 934,000 dollars in election bets hit Kalshi in a single second, and the Texas Senate race alone had drawn nearly 67 million dollars in wagers as of October 29, according to the Anti-Corruption Data Collective.

According to Reuters, via Hot96, midterm election wagering exceeded 1.48 billion dollars, with a late burst of activity arriving after the first polls closed at 6 p.m. ET.

Analytics firm BETINT found that traders placed more than 4 million dollars in bets within minutes of those initial closures. Most of that money backed Democrats.

Large wagers punctuate the late trading

A single Polymarket bet of 951,198 dollars on Democrats winning control of the House led the late wagers, according to Reuters.

Kalshi also saw concentrated activity: nearly 934,000 dollars in election bets arrived in a single second. The figures show how much money could enter these markets in a very short window, without establishing how many traders were involved.

Senate contest draws substantial volume

Beyond the House-control betting, the Texas Senate race alone had attracted nearly 67 million dollars in wagers as of October 29, according to the Anti-Corruption Data Collective, cited in the reporting.

That earlier tally provides a separate measure of interest in an individual contest. It should not be confused with the bets recorded just after polling places began closing.

What it means for prediction markets

  • Timing matters: The more than 4 million dollars in late bets followed the first poll closures, not the closure of all polls.
  • Large bets are not broad consensus: The 951,198 dollar Polymarket wager represents a substantial individual position; the supplied figures do not establish how widely that view was shared.
  • Volume is not probability: The reporting details money wagered, but provides no corresponding contract prices or odds changes with which to assess shifts in market expectations.
