The NBA Just Picked Its Prediction Markets
The last major North American league without a formal position on prediction markets now has one. The NBA has named Kalshi and Polymarket its Preferred Prediction Market Exchanges, with official data from Sportradar, rights to league intellectual property, and a memorandum of understanding with the CFTC.
The league's price for legitimacy is control. The agreements limit which NBA markets the exchanges may offer, ban league and team personnel from trading NBA contracts, and require suspicious trading to be reported and shared for investigations. DraftKings was elevated to an Authorized Prediction Market Operator under the same framework.
The NBA joins MLB and the NHL in signing information-sharing arrangements with the regulator, a pattern that is quietly becoming the industry's operating template: official data in, integrity data out.
Five days ago these exchanges were counterparties the league had no deals with. Now they settle NBA markets on the league's own data feed. That is what mainstream looks like when it arrives.
