Michigan Drew a Line: No New Sports Positions

The state-by-state fight over sports contracts now has a quieter kind of casualty. From October 26, Michigan users can no longer open new sports positions on Polymarket, which joins Coinbase, Robinhood and Kalshi in halting state-level sports contracts there.

No courtroom drama, no press conference. A market that existed on Sunday was closed to new money on Monday, in one state, while the same contracts kept trading everywhere else. That is what a patchwork looks like in practice: not a national ban, but a map that changes at every border.

Michigan's move lands while the federal fight escalates elsewhere. The CFTC has now sued ten states over enforcement against federally regulated exchanges, arguing event contracts are swaps under federal law. States answer that sports contracts are gambling under theirs.

Until an appellate court settles it, traders should expect more lines like Michigan's: drawn quietly, enforced immediately, and different on the other side of the state line.
