Kalshi unemployment wager falls sharply as trading resumes after days of inactivity

The long-dated Kalshi contract sat untraded at 90 cents for days before reopening at 65 cents, printing as low as 16 cents and settling at 26 cents on 1,071 contracts, about 53 percent of everything the market has traded since June 2025. The repricing followed labor data showing weekly jobless claims at a four-week average of 197,750, the lowest since 1969.

A Kalshi contract on unemployment rising above 7 percent before 2030 dropped 64 points to 26 cents on Sunday, according to Tech Insider. The move sharply reduced the price of a long-dated labor-market outcome.

A concentrated burst of trading

The contract had remained at 90 cents for days without trading before reopening at 65 cents, according to Tech Insider. It then traded as low as 16 cents before settling at 26 cents.

Volume reached 1,071 contracts, representing about 53 percent of all trading in the market since June 2025. That concentration puts the price change in context: more than half of the market’s cumulative volume accompanied the repricing after several inactive days.

Labor data precedes the move

The repricing followed labor data showing a four-week average of 197,750 weekly jobless claims, the lowest since 1969, according to Tech Insider.

Those figures provide near-term context for a contract whose horizon extends to before 2030. The reported sequence does not establish how much of the price movement reflected the claims data rather than the return of trading after inactivity.

What it means for prediction markets

  • Inactive prices need context: The earlier 90-cent level stood for days without transactions, limiting its usefulness as a measure of continuously updated expectations.
  • Volume matters alongside price: The 1,071 contracts traded amounted to about 53 percent of lifetime activity since June 2025, making this a substantial episode in the market’s history.
  • The time horizons differ: Weekly claims describe current labor conditions; the contract concerns unemployment above 7 percent before 2030. The latest data does not resolve that longer-term outcome.
