Traders Beat the Models 133 to 31: Weather Is a Market Now
The forecast now has a price. Kalshi runs a market on each day's high temperature in 24 US cities, and a tracker that puts every market next to 82 weather model runs and the live thermometer reading that settles it found a clear winner in the first week: the traders were better forecasters in 133 of 164 markets.
Today's sharpest fight is Oklahoma City. Traders favor a high of 71 degrees or below at 61 cents, while the models lean toward 74 to 75 degrees at 33 percent and give the traders' pick only 13 percent, a 48-point gap between money and models. Austin is nearly as split: traders price 85 to 86 degrees at 60 cents, while the models favor 81 to 82 at 30 percent.
The pattern repeats across the board. In Washington, DC, traders price 65 to 66 degrees at 74 cents against a model reading of 40 percent for the same band. In New York City, traders favor 60 to 61 degrees at 55 cents while the models put that band at 37 percent. In Atlanta, both sides agree it stays cool, but traders are firmer: 63 degrees or below at 92 cents against the models at 84 percent.
That is the point of a weather market. A forecast model gives one answer for free; a market makes thousands of people pay to be wrong. When traders beat 82 model runs in 133 of 164 markets in a single week, the thermometer stops being just a weather story and becomes a scoreboard, settled every afternoon, city by city.
