The Lab Now Has a Ticker: Drug Trials Became a Trade
Prediction markets have left the election and the stadium and entered the laboratory. Polymarket has hosted biotech contracts since May, and on July 16 Kalshi launched a suite of markets on Phase 3 trial outcomes and full FDA approvals. Volume topped $100,000 shortly after launch across about 13 markets tied to companies including Sanofi, Eli Lilly and Gilead Sciences.
The board is still live and specific. As of October 30, Kalshi offered odds on when the FDA will approve Eli Lilly's retatrutide, while Polymarket offered odds on by what date the FDA will approve Moderna's melanoma vaccine, intismeran autogene. Pharmaceutical Technology reports users may place hundreds of thousands of dollars on outcomes like these.
The stakes explain the interest. Bringing a single drug to market costs an estimated $2.3 billion, and as of the FDA's April 2026 figures, roughly 30 percent of trials required to report results had posted none. Kalshi, working with AppliedXL, says a public contract can produce a continuously updated public probability, and it framed the markets in May as a way to help solve drug development's information silo problem.
The guardrails are part of the story. Kalshi's pilot covers only late-stage trials, lists a contract only after a trial finishes enrolling, and requires employment verification for traders in these markets. Fenwick partners Chelsea Anderson and Noah Solowiejczyk told Pharmaceutical Technology the markets are here to stay, but that private biotechs, once shielded from this exposure, now face a new insider-trading risk and likely more regulation.
