COMEX metals recover despite rate concerns
COMEX gold futures advanced $57.20, or 1.39%, to $4,165.10 per ounce on Thursday, October 15, while silver futures added $0.438, or 0.78%, to $56.315 per ounce. The latest available October 15 figures showed both metals recovering from recent losses, according to CNBC-TV18 reporting carried by TradingView.
The rebound followed a stronger-than-expected acceleration in US consumer price inflation in September. That raised concerns that the Federal Reserve could maintain restrictive policy for longer or consider raising interest rates. Higher rates typically make non-yielding gold and silver less attractive by increasing the opportunity cost of holding them.
US stocks, meanwhile, recorded a third straight overnight decline: the S&P 500 fell 1.1%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.9%. Investors were reassessing the consequences of higher inflation and borrowing costs, with producer price inflation, retail sales and remarks from Federal Reserve officials next in focus.
India’s bullion prices face currency effects
The international recovery followed declines in New Delhi on Wednesday, October 14. Gold fell ₹1,800 to ₹1.50 lakh per 10 grams, including all taxes, according to the All India Sarafa Association figures cited in the report. Silver dropped ₹5,000 to ₹2.21 lakh per kilogram.
An appreciating rupee against the US dollar contributed to the domestic pressure by lowering the cost of dollar-denominated imports, other things being equal. Indian bullion prices also reflect import costs, taxes and local demand, rather than international prices alone.
Higher international gold and silver prices could therefore lend support to domestic bullion without determining its direction. Dollar movements, the rupee and expectations for US rates remain relevant, while incoming inflation data and shifts in the anticipated Federal Reserve policy path could sustain short-term volatility.
What it means for prediction markets
- Fed-policy contracts: The inflation surprise puts the possibility of prolonged restrictive policy—or a rate increase—in focus. Producer prices, retail sales and Fed commentary are the next reported signals to watch.
- Metals-price contracts: Gold and silver rose despite concerns about higher rates. The session’s gains alone do not establish a change in the expected policy path.
- Settlement benchmarks matter: COMEX futures quoted in dollars per ounce and New Delhi bullion prices quoted in rupees use different benchmarks and face different currency and cost influences. They should not be treated as interchangeable outcomes.
