Polymarket signs with the Rangers; NHL remains the only league aboard

Rangers deal extends hockey’s lead

Polymarket has secured a Rangers partnership two weeks after Kalshi’s agreement with the Blackhawks became the first formal tie-up between a prediction-market platform and a North American professional sports team, according to Front Office Sports reporting republished by GambleRss. Publicly traded Madison Square Garden Sports announced the agreement in a press release; it covers the Rangers but not the Knicks, which the company also owns.

The agreement gives Polymarket promotional exposure during Rangers games at Madison Square Garden, including LED displays and on-ice activities. MSG Sports COO Jamaal Lesane praised the operator’s reliability and innovation, while Polymarket founder and CEO Shayne Coplan described the partnership as a way to introduce more fans to interactive, real-time markets.

The Knicks’ absence does not, by itself, establish a broader policy divide within MSG Sports. The Rangers signed a separate agreement with Pellera Technologies earlier this month, and the Knicks partnered with DoorDash in 2022. Both teams were included when MSG Sports extended its Anheuser-Busch partnership on Wednesday. The Knicks and Polymarket offered no comment beyond the release, according to the report.

League acceptance remains uneven

The NHL remains the only major sports league to embrace prediction markets, with both Polymarket and Kalshi serving as official partners. Commissioner Gary Bettman has framed those relationships as a means of exercising oversight, saying the league can ask the platforms to remove contracts it considers inappropriate. The NFL, MLB and NBA have not followed, although CNBC and CNN are incorporating prediction-market data. In May, the NBA’s assistant general counsel asked the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for rules addressing integrity risks.

The regulatory distinction remains central to the debate: traditional sports betting operates under state-by-state regulation, while prediction-market platforms fall under federal CFTC oversight. Scrutiny also extends beyond sports. According to the report, a newly created anonymous account earned more than $400,000 in less than 24 hours this week from markets that included whether Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro would leave power by the end of this month. The timing prompted one New York lawmaker to accelerate federal legislation intended to prevent insider trading on the platforms.

Polymarket’s broader expansion

Polymarket’s return to the U.S. under President Donald Trump followed a prohibition lasting nearly four years under a settlement with the Biden administration. Donald Trump Jr. is an investor through his firm, 1789 Capital. Separately, in October, New York Stock Exchange operator Intercontinental Exchange agreed to invest up to $2 billion in Polymarket at a $9 billion valuation, according to the report.

What it means for prediction markets

  • Team-level adoption is expanding within hockey. The Rangers agreement follows Kalshi’s Blackhawks deal, but does not demonstrate acceptance by the NBA or the Knicks.
  • Contract oversight is part of the NHL’s rationale. Bettman’s stated ability to seek contract removals makes market selection an important element of the league’s platform relationships.
  • Commercial growth and integrity scrutiny are moving together. New promotional access and investment commitments coexist with concerns about sports contracts and potentially informed trading outside sports.
