NHL deepens ties with both platforms; Rangers strike deal with Polymarket

Rangers agreement expands NHL ties
Polymarket has secured a partnership involving the Rangers through Madison Square Garden Sports, the publicly traded owner of both the Rangers and Knicks. According to Front Office Sports, in reporting republished by GambleRss, the announcement follows Kalshi’s Blackhawks agreement by two weeks. That earlier deal was the first formal partnership between a prediction-market platform and a North American professional sports team.
The Rangers agreement excludes the Knicks. Polymarket will receive promotion during Rangers games at Madison Square Garden, including LED-screen exposure and contests on the ice. MSG Sports COO Jamaal Lesane described the platform as a strong partner, while Polymarket founder and CEO Shayne Coplan presented the agreement as a way to introduce prediction markets to more fans.
Separate sponsorships are not unusual for the two MSG Sports teams: the Rangers announced a Pellera Technologies agreement earlier this month, while the Knicks partnered with DoorDash in 2022. Both teams also participate in shared arrangements, including the Anheuser-Busch partnership MSG Sports extended on Wednesday. The Knicks and Polymarket offered no comment beyond the press release, according to the report.
League access meets regulatory scrutiny
Both Kalshi and Polymarket already hold official NHL partnerships. The NHL remains the only major sports league to embrace prediction markets, with commissioner Gary Bettman saying those relationships allow the league to seek the removal of contracts it considers inappropriate. The NFL, MLB, and NBA have not followed that approach, although CNBC and CNN are incorporating prediction-market data. In May, the NBA’s assistant general counsel asked the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) for targeted rules addressing integrity risks.
The regulatory distinction remains central: traditional sports betting is overseen state by state, while prediction-market platforms fall under federal CFTC regulation. Scrutiny also extends beyond sports. According to the report, a newly created anonymous account earned more than $400,000 in less than 24 hours this week across markets that included whether Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro would leave power by the end of this month. The timing prompted a New York lawmaker to accelerate federal legislation aimed at preventing insider trading on the platforms.
Polymarket’s wider expansion
Polymarket’s Rangers agreement comes after its return to the U.S. under President Donald Trump, following nearly four years of exclusion under a settlement with the Biden administration. Donald Trump Jr. has invested in the company through 1789 Capital. In October, Intercontinental Exchange, which operates the New York Stock Exchange, agreed to invest up to $2 billion in Polymarket at a $9 billion valuation, according to Front Office Sports.
What it means for prediction markets
- Team-level distribution is expanding: The Rangers and Blackhawks agreements add franchise partnerships to the platforms’ existing NHL relationships.
- Adoption remains uneven: The Knicks’ absence underscores the limited scope of this agreement; it does not establish NBA participation.
- Contract oversight matters: Bettman’s stated ability to seek contract removals makes league relationships relevant to which NHL markets remain available.
- Commercial growth does not resolve integrity concerns: The NBA’s regulatory request and the reported push for insider-trading legislation remain distinct issues alongside new sponsorships.
