Kalshi fined three political candidates for trading on themselves
Two Democrats and one Republican — in its latest insider-trading enforcement push; two accepted five-year suspensions and small fines ($784.20, $539.85). A Virginia…
Kalshi has imposed fines and five-year suspensions on three political candidates over trades involving their own candidacies, according to Casino.org reporting republished by GambleRss. The enforcement action, reported on Oct. 8, 2026, involves two Democrats and one Republican and extends the exchange’s efforts to police insider trading.
Candidates and penalties
Kalshi did not identify the candidates publicly. The report links the cases to Ezekiel Enriquez, a Republican who ran for a House seat in Texas; Minnesota State Sen. Matt Klein, a congressional candidate; and Mark Moran, a US Senate candidate in Virginia. Enriquez and Klein were fined $784.20 and $539.85, respectively, and both accepted five-year suspensions.
Moran, who is challenging Sen. Mark Warner in a primary, acknowledged trading on himself. Although the report describes him as a Democrat, it also notes that his campaign website lists him as an independent. Kalshi imposed a $6,229.30 fine and a five-year suspension in his case.
Moran says trades were deliberate
Moran said on X that he acted to test whether Kalshi would pursue him and how its enforcement process would work. He linked that decision to potential manipulation he said he had discovered in Polymarket’s NYC mayoral market, which he said the NY Post had covered. He also claimed Kalshi had approached him multiple times about marketing partnerships.
A critic of Virginia Democrats’ positions on gun ownership and a recent gerrymandering effort, Moran framed the trades as a protest against Kalshi’s effects on young men. He said that, as a senator, he would seek significant penalties against the company, including a 25% vice tax intended to reduce the national debt.
Kalshi said its investigation found that both trades in the Senate candidate’s case breached its rules. The company said it verified the trader’s identity through internal records and publicly available information. According to Kalshi, he initially acknowledged his candidacy and the violations, then stopped communicating and did not respond to requests to address or settle the case.
The exchange, described by Casino.org as the largest US prediction-market operator, has recently strengthened its internal safeguards against insider trading. Those measures include screening intended to prevent prohibited activity by politicians and athletes before trades occur.
What it means for prediction markets
- Candidate participation is an enforcement issue: The cases show Kalshi applying its internal trading restrictions to people directly involved in the events underlying its contracts.
- The outcomes differ: Enriquez and Klein accepted their sanctions; Kalshi said the Senate candidate stopped cooperating before it imposed his penalty.
- Identity claims require care: Kalshi withheld the candidates’ names. The reported identities should remain distinct from the exchange’s own disclosures, although Moran publicly acknowledged his trades.
- Market integrity remains central: The actions put both preventive screening and post-trade investigations in focus as Kalshi seeks to address insider-trading concerns.
