Google bans prediction-market ads in Connecticut, the fifth U.S. state excluded
Quiet quarter-hour — no significant new platform headline in the last 15 minutes, so this fresh legal/regulatory item leads, in a category different from the previous…
Google has barred prediction-market advertising in Connecticut, making it the fifth U.S. state excluded from an advertising program opened to federally regulated operators in January, according to PPC Land. The restriction was announced and took effect on October 7, 2026, leaving advertisers no transition period.
The prohibition covers prediction-market contracts and related products. Connecticut joins Nevada, Ohio, Michigan and New York on the excluded list, but Google did not explain its decision or specify how the restriction applies to broader trading apps that also offer event contracts.
Federal eligibility, state restrictions
Google began accepting prediction-market ads on January 21, 2026, following a January 5 policy announcement. Certification is available to Commodity Futures Trading Commission-authorized Designated Contract Markets primarily listing exchange-listed event contracts, and National Futures Association-registered brokerages providing access to those contracts, according to PPC Land. That federal qualification no longer provides advertising access across all states.
Nevada was excluded when the program launched. Ohio followed on June 2 after a federal court denied Kalshi a preliminary injunction against the state’s gambling regulators. Michigan and New York were added on July 13; Gambling Insider reported that both states had recently secured court victories against Kalshi. The three geographic updates since June have each taken effect immediately.
Connecticut enforcement and a documentation gap
Connecticut’s advertising restriction follows a broader state crackdown. On September 10, 2026, Governor Ned Lamont and Consumer Protection Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli announced cease-and-desist orders against Polymarket, Coinbase, Crypto.com, Robinhood, ProphetX, Novig, Webull, Gemini and Underdog Predict. According to the governor’s office, the companies were ordered to stop advertising and providing sports event contracts or other unlicensed online gambling to Connecticut residents and allow customer withdrawals.
The governor’s office also said the state attorney general had sued Kalshi earlier in September seeking an injunction against unlicensed sports wagers. In August 2026, a federal judge in Connecticut ruled that sports event contracts constituted unlicensed gambling and were not protected by federal commodities law. Google’s notice does not cite those proceedings or establish that they prompted its decision.
Advertisers also faced inconsistent documentation. According to PPC Land, Google’s main prediction-markets policy page still omitted Connecticut as of October 11, 2026, four days after the change-log notice made the prohibition effective. The notice leaves unresolved the scope of related products, its application to other Google buying channels and whether exclusions could be reversed following a favorable federal appeals ruling for operators.
What it means for prediction markets
- Advertising access and federal status are separate questions. CFTC authorization or NFA registration remains the certification requirement, but neither guarantees permission to advertise in an excluded state.
- The timing creates operational exposure. Immediate restrictions require advertisers to adjust geographic targeting without a grace period; relying solely on the main policy page could miss a newly prohibited location.
- The ban is an advertising development, not a new court ruling. It limits Google Ads access in Connecticut without resolving the underlying dispute over federal and state jurisdiction.
- Further exclusions remain uncertain. Google has not announced a sixth state or explained the conditions under which an existing restriction might be removed.
