44 Ways to Know the Answer: The Insider Problem Inside Election Markets

The hardest contracts in this election are not who wins. They are the ones somebody already knows. Researchers call them knowable markets: contracts on candidate withdrawals, endorsements, debate appearances and rally remarks. The Anti-Corruption Data Collective counts an average of 44 of them tied to each individual race, and they have already traded more than $20 million.

The warning case is Maine. Researchers flagged dozens of suspicious, highly correlated trades on a Kalshi contract on whether Graham Platner would drop out of the Senate race, placed just before a damaging scandal became public. The trades do not prove insider trading, but they show the shape of the risk: the narrower the question, the fewer people hold the answer.

The exchanges are answering with enforcement. Kalshi told CNN it has suspended at least six 2026 candidates for betting on their own races, and its midterm transparency recap detailed four congressional cases: Mark Moran fined $6,229.30, Matt Klein $539.85 and Ezekiel Enriquez $784.20, each with five-year bans, and Laurie Buckhout just under $2,600 with a three-year suspension.

Washington is moving too. On October 5, Representative Don Davis introduced the No Betting on Your Own Race Act, with a penalty of $10,000 or three times the net gain, whichever is larger. Polymarket says it has hired a former FBI official to lead investigations and regularly refers cases to the Justice Department.

Two days out, that is the credibility trade. A market on who wins Congress aggregates thousands of strangers. A market on what one campaign does next can be settled by a handful of insiders, and everyone pricing it knows the difference.
