The One-Cent Shelf: $419 Million Traded on Almost Nothing

The One-Cent Shelf: $419 Million Traded on Almost Nothing

Look at the top of the prediction-market volume board and the biggest numbers carry the smallest prices. Eight markets priced at exactly 1 cent, the floor, have traded $418,727,767 between them, according to PicksByOdds' live board on October 31. Volume, it turns out, does not require belief.

The leader is "Will Jesus Christ return before 2027?" at 1 cent on $66,761,416 traded. Next is LeBron James winning the 2028 presidential election, also 1 cent, on $54,895,306. Oprah Winfrey winning the 2028 Democratic nomination follows at 1 cent on $54,448,323, and Bernie Sanders winning the same nomination at 1 cent on $52,923,492. Those four alone account for more than $228 million.

The shelf runs deeper. Chelsea Clinton at $51,070,529, Andrew Yang at $48,953,782, Tim Walz at $44,877,007 and Hunter Biden at $44,797,912, each priced at 1 cent for the 2028 Democratic nomination or the presidency, bring the eight-market total past $418 million, none of them moving off the floor.

PicksByOdds notes much of that activity likely reflects traders selling cheap Yes shares to collect small, slow returns, not anyone expecting the outcome. A 1-cent Yes pays a dollar if it happens; the other side collects the near-certain cent, repeated at enormous scale. High volume on a longshot is still a longshot.

That is a tell about this market's maturity. The board's heaviest traffic is not always a forecast. Sometimes it is a yield trade wearing a headline, and the one-cent shelf is where prediction markets quietly became a place to park conviction that nothing will happen.
