Five Minutes at a Time

Prediction markets used to ask where Bitcoin would close the month. Now they ask where it closes in the next five minutes.
On October 28, Polymarket's regulated U.S. platform launched five-minute up-or-down contracts on Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and XRP. Each contract asks one question: does the price finish the five-minute window above or below where it started? A correct call pays $1 a share; a wrong one pays nothing. With 288 windows a day per asset, the platform now runs crypto contracts at five-minute, 15-minute, hourly, daily, weekly and monthly intervals.
The format is proven. Polymarket's international platform introduced five-minute crypto contracts in February and generated roughly $4 billion in volume in their first six months. The U.S. versions run through QCX LLC under CFTC oversight and settle against CF Benchmarks pricing using time-weighted averages, a safeguard added in August.
The launch lands under a microscope: the CFTC is reviewing Polymarket's compliance with its 2022 settlement even as the contracts go live. Speed is the product now, and the scrutiny scales with it.
