Election Night Now Has a Ticker: The Odds Move Into the Newsroom

Four days before the November 3 midterms, prediction markets are no longer just a screen traders watch. They are moving into the newsroom itself. CNN, CBS News, CNBC and Dow Jones have entered commercial partnerships with Kalshi and Polymarket to cite election trading odds in their reporting, according to Bloomberg reporting on October 30.

The money explains the attention. Bloomberg analysis of Dune data puts election-related trading volume on Kalshi and Polymarket at about $1.5 billion. Traders are pricing Democrats at 94% to win the House on Polymarket and 69% to take the Senate, with Kalshi close behind at 92.1% for the House and 68.5% for the Senate.

The deals are not all the same. CBS News announced Kalshi as its prediction market sponsor. CNBC disclosed a partnership with Kalshi involving customer acquisition revenue sharing and a minority equity investment. The Wall Street Journal homepage now features a Polymarket odds column.

There are limits, and a debate. Fox and CNN said they will not broadcast odds on air on election night, and some commentators have raised concerns that commercial ties could compromise news independence. That tension is the story: the odds have become too large to ignore, and too commercial to treat as just another poll.
